Mandalay Entry Requirements
Visa, immigration, and customs information
Visa Requirements
Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.
Myanmar requires visas for most foreign nationals entering Mandalay or any other part of the country. Only a handful of countries enjoy visa exemption agreements. The e-Visa system is available for tourist and business purposes for eligible nationalities.
Very limited visa-free access to Myanmar
Visa-free entry is only for ASEAN nationals listed above. All other nationalities require a visa. Entry must be through designated international airports including Mandalay, Yangon, or Nay Pyi Taw.
Online visa application available for most nationalities for tourist and business purposes
Cost: Tourist e-Visa: USD $50; Business e-Visa: USD $70 (plus processing fees)
E-visa is only valid for entry through Yangon, Mandalay, and Nay Pyi Taw international airports, plus certain land border crossings. Print the e-visa approval letter and present it upon arrival. Not extendable beyond the initial 28 days for tourist visas.
Traditional visa application through Myanmar embassy or consulate
Some nationalities including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Israel, Nigeria, Pakistan, and several others are not eligible for e-visa and must apply through embassies. Work visas, long-term visas, and special entry permits must be arranged through embassies regardless of nationality.
Arrival Process
Upon arrival at Mandalay International Airport or other entry points, travelers will go through immigration and customs procedures. The process is generally efficient, though it can be slower during peak travel times. Having all documents organized and readily accessible will expedite your entry.

Tips for Smooth Entry
Customs & Duty-Free
Myanmar Customs enforces regulations on items brought into the country. Travelers must declare currency over specified amounts, restricted items, and dutiable goods. Customs officers may inspect luggage, and penalties for non-declaration or smuggling prohibited items are severe, including fines and imprisonment.
Prohibited Items
- Narcotics and illegal drugs - severe penalties including death penalty for trafficking
- Weapons, firearms, ammunition, and explosives - unless with special permit
- Electronic cigarettes, vaping devices, and e-liquids - banned in Myanmar
- Pornographic materials and obscene publications
- Items depicting or containing Buddha images in disrespectful manner
- Satellite phones and communication equipment without prior authorization
- Counterfeit currency and goods
- Endangered species products (ivory, certain animal skins, etc.) - CITES regulations apply
- Antiquities and cultural artifacts without export permits
- Playing cards and gambling devices (except in sealed, unopened packaging for personal use)
Restricted Items
- Prescription medications - bring reasonable quantities with doctor's prescription and keep in original packaging. Declare at customs if carrying large quantities
- Drones and aerial photography equipment - require special permits from Ministry of Transport and Communications; import without permit may result in confiscation
- Professional camera and video equipment - may require temporary import documentation for commercial use
- Religious materials for distribution - may require approval from Ministry of Religious Affairs
- Large quantities of electronics - may be questioned if appearing to be for commercial purposes rather than personal use
- Gems and jewelry - must be declared; export of gems requires documentation from Myanmar Gems Enterprise
Health Requirements
Myanmar has specific health requirements for entry, particularly regarding yellow fever vaccination. While COVID-19 restrictions have largely been lifted, travelers should verify current health protocols before departure as requirements can change rapidly.
Required Vaccinations
- Yellow Fever - Required if arriving from or transiting through yellow fever endemic countries in Africa or South America. Certificate of vaccination must be presented at immigration. Not required if arriving directly from non-endemic countries.
Recommended Vaccinations
- Hepatitis A - Recommended for all travelers due to food and water risks
- Hepatitis B - Recommended for most travelers, especially those who may have intimate contact with locals or require medical treatment
- Typhoid - Recommended for most travelers, especially those visiting smaller cities or rural areas
- Japanese Encephalitis - Recommended for travelers spending extended time in rural areas, especially during rainy season
- Rabies - Recommended for travelers with extensive outdoor activities or contact with animals
- Routine vaccinations - Ensure up-to-date on measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, varicella (chickenpox), polio, and yearly flu shot
Health Insurance
Comprehensive travel health insurance with medical evacuation coverage is strongly recommended. Myanmar's healthcare infrastructure is limited, especially outside major cities. Ensure your policy covers emergency medical treatment, hospitalization, and medical evacuation to Thailand or Singapore if needed. Some facilities may require payment upfront before treatment. Keep insurance documents and emergency contact numbers readily accessible.

Special Situations
Additional requirements for specific circumstances.
Children must have their own passport and visa (e-visa available for minors). Birth certificates should be carried. If traveling with only one parent or with non-parents, carry a notarized letter of consent from the non-traveling parent(s) or legal guardian authorizing the trip, including travel dates and destinations. This may be requested at immigration. Unaccompanied minors require special documentation and airline approval. Ensure children's vaccinations are current, especially routine childhood immunizations.
Importing pets into Myanmar is complex and requires advance planning. Requirements include: valid health certificate issued within 7 days of travel, rabies vaccination certificate (at least 30 days but not more than 12 months before arrival), import permit from Myanmar Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department (apply at least 30 days before travel), and microchip identification. Pets must enter through Yangon International Airport as Mandalay does not have quarantine facilities. Quarantine period may be required depending on origin country. Certain breeds may be restricted. Contact Myanmar embassy and your airline well in advance as pet import policies are strictly enforced and documentation requirements are extensive.
Tourist e-visas (28 days) are generally not extendable. For stays beyond initial visa period, you must exit Myanmar and re-enter with a new visa, or apply for a different visa category before your current visa expires. Business visas may be extended through the Immigration Department in Yangon or Mandalay with sponsorship from a Myanmar company. Extensions require application at least one week before visa expiry, with passport photos, application forms, and extension fees. Overstaying your visa results in fines (USD $3 per day) and potential deportation or entry bans. For long-term stays, consider applying for appropriate long-term visa categories (work, business, etc.) through Myanmar embassies before arrival. Foreigners must register with immigration authorities within 24 hours of arrival at their accommodation - hotels do this automatically, but private accommodation requires manual registration.
Journalists, photographers, and media personnel must obtain special journalist visas before arrival and cannot enter on tourist visas. Apply through Myanmar embassy with letter from media organization, detailed itinerary, and purpose of visit. Working as a journalist on a tourist visa is illegal and may result in arrest and deportation. Film crews require additional permits from Ministry of Information. Given the current political situation in Myanmar, journalism activities are heavily restricted and monitored. Consult your news organization's security team and legal department before planning any media work in Myanmar.
Business visa (70 days) is required for business activities and can be obtained via e-visa or embassy. For employment in Myanmar, a work permit is mandatory and must be arranged by your Myanmar employer before arrival. Work permits require company sponsorship, employment contract, medical examination, and multiple government approvals. Working on a tourist or business visa is illegal. Business travelers should carry invitation letters from Myanmar companies and documentation of business purpose. Multiple-entry business visas are available through embassies for frequent travelers.
