Mandalay Entry Requirements

Mandalay Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Information last reviewed December 2024. Always verify with official Myanmar government sources and your country's travel advisory before traveling, as entry requirements and security situations can change rapidly.
Mandalay, Myanmar's second-largest city and cultural heart, welcomes international travelers through Mandalay International Airport (MDL) and overland border crossings. Entry to Mandalay follows Myanmar's national immigration policies, which require most foreign nationals to obtain a visa before arrival. The country has implemented an e-Visa system for eligible nationalities, streamlining the application process for tourists and business travelers. However, travelers should be aware that Myanmar's political situation since 2021 has led to changes in travel advisories and entry procedures. The immigration process in Mandalay is relatively straightforward for those with proper documentation. Mandalay International Airport serves as a designated international entry point, though most international visitors arrive via Yangon before taking domestic connections. Travelers entering through Mandalay should ensure all visa documentation is in order, as immigration officials are thorough in their checks. It's important to note that certain restricted areas in Myanmar require additional travel permits, which should be arranged in advance. Before planning your trip to Mandalay, verify current entry requirements with Myanmar's Ministry of Immigration and Population or your nearest Myanmar embassy. Due to the evolving political and security situation, some countries have issued travel warnings, and visa policies may change with limited notice. Ensure your passport has at least six months validity from your intended date of entry, and check whether your nationality is eligible for e-Visa or requires embassy application.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Print all visa documents and confirmations - don't rely solely on digital copies as internet access may be limited or systems may not accept electronic documents.
Carry a pen to fill out arrival/departure cards and customs forms on the flight or before reaching immigration counters.
Have USD cash available for any fees or emergencies, as ATMs may not always work with foreign cards and credit cards are not widely accepted.
Keep accommodation booking confirmations easily accessible - immigration officers frequently ask for proof of accommodation.
Be patient and polite with immigration officers. Answer questions clearly and honestly. Do not attempt to photograph or video immigration procedures.
Verify your passport entry stamp shows the correct entry date and visa expiration date before leaving the immigration counter.
Register with your embassy upon arrival if staying for an extended period, given the current security situation in Myanmar.
Download offline maps and important contact numbers before arrival as mobile data may not work immediately.

Customs & Duty-Free

Myanmar Customs enforces regulations on items brought into the country. Travelers must declare currency over specified amounts, restricted items, and dutiable goods. Customs officers may inspect luggage, and penalties for non-declaration or smuggling prohibited items are severe, including fines and imprisonment.

Health Requirements

Myanmar has specific health requirements for entry, particularly regarding yellow fever vaccination. While COVID-19 restrictions have largely been lifted, travelers should verify current health protocols before departure as requirements can change rapidly.

Required Vaccinations

  • Yellow Fever - Required if arriving from or transiting through yellow fever endemic countries in Africa or South America. Certificate of vaccination must be presented at immigration. Not required if arriving directly from non-endemic countries.

Recommended Vaccinations

  • Hepatitis A - Recommended for all travelers due to food and water risks
  • Hepatitis B - Recommended for most travelers, especially those who may have intimate contact with locals or require medical treatment
  • Typhoid - Recommended for most travelers, especially those visiting smaller cities or rural areas
  • Japanese Encephalitis - Recommended for travelers spending extended time in rural areas, especially during rainy season
  • Rabies - Recommended for travelers with extensive outdoor activities or contact with animals
  • Routine vaccinations - Ensure up-to-date on measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, varicella (chickenpox), polio, and yearly flu shot

Health Insurance

Comprehensive travel health insurance with medical evacuation coverage is strongly recommended. Myanmar's healthcare infrastructure is limited, especially outside major cities. Ensure your policy covers emergency medical treatment, hospitalization, and medical evacuation to Thailand or Singapore if needed. Some facilities may require payment upfront before treatment. Keep insurance documents and emergency contact numbers readily accessible.

Current Health Requirements: As of late 2024, Myanmar has lifted most COVID-19 related entry requirements including vaccination certificates and pre-departure testing. However, health screening may still occur at airports. Check the most current requirements with Myanmar's Ministry of Health and Sports or your airline before departure, as protocols can be reinstated quickly in response to health situations. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for certain regions. Consult a travel medicine specialist 4-6 weeks before departure for personalized health advice.

Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Children must have their own passport and visa (e-visa available for minors). Birth certificates should be carried. If traveling with only one parent or with non-parents, carry a notarized letter of consent from the non-traveling parent(s) or legal guardian authorizing the trip, including travel dates and destinations. This may be requested at immigration. Unaccompanied minors require special documentation and airline approval. Ensure children's vaccinations are current, especially routine childhood immunizations.

Traveling with Pets

Importing pets into Myanmar is complex and requires advance planning. Requirements include: valid health certificate issued within 7 days of travel, rabies vaccination certificate (at least 30 days but not more than 12 months before arrival), import permit from Myanmar Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department (apply at least 30 days before travel), and microchip identification. Pets must enter through Yangon International Airport as Mandalay does not have quarantine facilities. Quarantine period may be required depending on origin country. Certain breeds may be restricted. Contact Myanmar embassy and your airline well in advance as pet import policies are strictly enforced and documentation requirements are extensive.

Extended Stays and Visa Extensions

Tourist e-visas (28 days) are generally not extendable. For stays beyond initial visa period, you must exit Myanmar and re-enter with a new visa, or apply for a different visa category before your current visa expires. Business visas may be extended through the Immigration Department in Yangon or Mandalay with sponsorship from a Myanmar company. Extensions require application at least one week before visa expiry, with passport photos, application forms, and extension fees. Overstaying your visa results in fines (USD $3 per day) and potential deportation or entry bans. For long-term stays, consider applying for appropriate long-term visa categories (work, business, etc.) through Myanmar embassies before arrival. Foreigners must register with immigration authorities within 24 hours of arrival at their accommodation - hotels do this automatically, but private accommodation requires manual registration.

Journalists and Media Personnel

Journalists, photographers, and media personnel must obtain special journalist visas before arrival and cannot enter on tourist visas. Apply through Myanmar embassy with letter from media organization, detailed itinerary, and purpose of visit. Working as a journalist on a tourist visa is illegal and may result in arrest and deportation. Film crews require additional permits from Ministry of Information. Given the current political situation in Myanmar, journalism activities are heavily restricted and monitored. Consult your news organization's security team and legal department before planning any media work in Myanmar.

Business Travelers and Work Permits

Business visa (70 days) is required for business activities and can be obtained via e-visa or embassy. For employment in Myanmar, a work permit is mandatory and must be arranged by your Myanmar employer before arrival. Work permits require company sponsorship, employment contract, medical examination, and multiple government approvals. Working on a tourist or business visa is illegal. Business travelers should carry invitation letters from Myanmar companies and documentation of business purpose. Multiple-entry business visas are available through embassies for frequent travelers.
